Case Study: T-2400 Cooling Tower for Tennis Court Comfort Cooling in Key Biscayne, FL

Playing tennis in South Florida means heat and humidity for most of the year. For an enclosed tennis court facility in Key Biscayne, Florida, a CTS Model T-2400 cooling tower paired with a plate heat exchanger has provided comfort cooling since the early 2000s.

The challenge

An enclosed tennis facility is a large space full of people exercising hard. In South Florida, the outdoor air is hot and humid for much of the year, so keeping players comfortable takes a lot of cooling. The owner needed a system that could handle that load without running up energy costs.

The site added its own demands. Key Biscayne is a barrier island surrounded by salt water. Salt air is hard on steel equipment, and corrosion can shorten the life of galvanized towers in coastal locations. The tower also had to fit into a landscaped setting surrounded by palm trees.

Why the customer chose Cooling Tower Systems

The customer compared options and chose CTS because it offered a more cost-effective, energy-efficient solution than competing proposals.

The T-2400 delivers 400 nominal tons with a single 15 HP fan motor. Its counterflow design fits that capacity into a round footprint about 17 feet across, and its FRP casing and basin do not rust in salt air.

The solution

CTS supplied a Model T-2400, installed with a plate heat exchanger. In this arrangement, the cooling tower water and the building's cooling loop stay separate. The tower rejects heat on one side of the heat exchanger, and the facility's closed loop picks up cooling on the other. This keeps tower water, with its exposure to outdoor air and debris, out of the building's comfort cooling system. It is a common way to protect coils and other equipment from fouling.

CTS supplies heat exchangers along with its towers, so the system can be sourced from one supplier.

The result

The facility got a high-capacity comfort cooling system at a lower cost than competing options, using a tower whose fiberglass construction suits a coastal environment. As the photo shows, the round FRP tower sits among the site's palms on the island.
