Cooling Tower Replacement Parts and Components

Genuine replacement parts and components for CTS cooling towers, fill media, fan blades, motors, drift eliminators, and water distribution, for every model we build.

Fill Media

Fill media is the heat transfer surface inside a cooling tower. Water flows over or through the fill while air passes through it, promoting evaporation and heat rejection. Over time, fill media can become fouled with scale buildup, biological growth, or physical damage, eventually requiring replacement.

Signs that your cooling tower may need new fill include:

  • Higher-than-normal approach temperatures after cleaning
  • Visible blockage, deterioration, or collapse of the fill
  • Fill media that is more than 10–15 years old in a properly maintained system

Our PVC fill media is 25 mm thick before embossing and 21 mm thick after embossing. It meets worldwide American flame spread certifications and performs extremely well in the wet deck environment of our cooling towers.

CTS Inc. manufactures our own fill packs in-house and offers PVC fill media for both counterflow and crossflow cooling towers. Fill is available in multiple flute configurations to accommodate different thermal load profiles and can be cut and shipped to your tower’s exact dimensions.

If you need a replacement fill pack for a CTS cooling tower, simply provide our sales office with your cooling tower model number and request a quotation.

If you have a round/circular fill pack without a model number, or if the tower is from another manufacturer, please provide the following information when requesting a quotation:

  • Fill pack diameter
  • Fill pack height
  • Number of fill layers

Fan Blades & Assembles

The fan is responsible for moving air through the cooling tower. Worn, cracked, or imbalanced fan blades can reduce airflow and thermal performance while increasing vibration and accelerating wear on bearings and the motor.

Signs that you may need new fan blades include:

  • Visible erosion or cracking
  • Increased vibration
  • Unusual noise
  • A measurable drop in airflow performance

All CTS cooling tower fan blade assemblies are machine balanced and tested to match the fan motor.

Smaller cooling towers equipped with nylon fan blades and hubs utilize a fixed-pitch design.

CTS aluminum fan blades and hubs require assembly and proper pitch adjustment to minimize excess noise and vibration. The blades include fixed reference points, and the aluminum hub contains an embedded pitch chart to assist with correct blade positioning and setup.

Motors

The fan motor drives air movement through the cooling tower. While motor failures can occur suddenly, they are often preceded by warning signs such as elevated amp draw, abnormal operating temperatures, or bearing noise.

All CTS fan motors are specifically built for cooling tower applications and are designed to operate within a moist air stream. These motors also feature extended shafts for proper cooling tower installation and performance.

CTS fan motors are offered in a variety of pole configurations depending on the size and requirements of the cooling tower:

  • 6-pole, 8-pole, and 10-pole motors are commonly used depending on tower size
  • Larger motors, 7.5 HP and above, are typically configured as 4-pole motors

Our 1/6 HP fan motors are generally configured for 110/220V, 60 Hz power and are used on smaller cooling tower systems ranging from 3-ton to 20-ton models.

Fan motors ranging from 1/2 HP through 5 HP are standard 3-phase motors rated for 208/230/460V, 60 Hz service. These motors are commonly used on cooling tower systems ranging from 20 tons through 200 tons.

For customers requiring single-phase power on smaller cooling tower models (3-ton through 20-ton systems), CTS can also provide compatible motor configurations based on the application requirements.

All fan motors installed by CTS are specifically designed and built for operation within a moist cooling tower air stream environment.

Drift Eliminators

Drift eliminators prevent water droplets from being carried out of the cooling tower by the airstream. Damaged or degraded drift eliminators can increase water loss and raise overall operating costs.

CTS offers PVC drift eliminator sections for both counterflow and crossflow cooling towers.

Water Distribution to Include Sprinkler Heads/Sprinkler Pipes

The hot water distribution system spreads incoming water evenly across the fill media. It is important to keep all sprinkler pipe water jets operating freely so that hot process water is distributed evenly across the PVC hot deck.

The information below can help determine the proper water volume, rotating speed, and revolutions per minute (RPM) of the sprinkler pipes for your cooling tower system.

CTS recommends operating cooling towers within plus or minus 20% of the nominal flow rate. Nominal flow rate is based on 3 gallons per minute (GPM) per ton of cooling capacity.

All CTS cooling towers include instructions for determining the proper revolutions per minute for sprinkler pipe assemblies. Maintaining the recommended RPM range will help keep your cooling tower system operating smoothly and efficiently while maximizing thermal performance.

If your process cooling system operates with a large Delta T, small approach, and low flow rate, your pumping system may need to be configured to move additional flow through a bypass line from the pump back to the cooling tower.

In these situations:

  • A properly sized bypass line should be installed from the pump discharge back to the cooling tower
  • The process supply line should tee into the bypass line at the appropriate location
  • All returning hot process water should be tied back into the bypass line downstream of the supply connection

Proper bypass configuration helps maintain adequate water distribution and consistent cooling tower performance under varying process conditions.
